What is Personal Color?
Personal Color is a color consulting system that analyzes your natural body colors (skin tone, hair, eyes) to find the most harmonious color palette for you.
As a core trend in K-Beauty and K-makeup, knowing your personal color helps you make better choices in makeup, skincare products, hair color, and outfit coordination (OOTD).
History of Personal Color
Personal color theory developed through research by various color experts.
- 1839Michel Eugène Chevreul - Discovered color contrast effects
- 1920sJohannes Itten - Established theory of classifying colors by 4 seasons
- 1928Robert C. Dorr - Developed warm/cool tone classification system
- 1964Japan PCCS - Completed color system widely used in Korea today
Warm Tone vs Cool Tone: The Basics
Warm Tone
- • Skin has yellow/golden undertones
- • Gold jewelry looks better
- • Veins appear greenish
- • Subdivided into Spring and Autumn types
Cool Tone
- • Skin has pink/blue undertones
- • Silver jewelry looks better
- • Veins appear purplish
- • Subdivided into Summer and Winter types
Common misconception: "Dark skin = warm tone, fair skin = cool tone" is incorrect!
Skin brightness (value) and tone (warm/cool) are separate concepts. Both fair-skinned warm tones and dark-skinned cool tones exist.
The 4-Season 8-Type System
This is the most widely used personal color classification in Korea. Warm and cool tones are each divided into 2 seasons, then further subdivided by brightness and saturation.
